Few bands stir up feelings of drunken teenage nights and subtle rebellion like Japanther. I am literally in love with these Brooklyn fuzz-punkers. So much so I can barley think of words to describe how excited I was to hear they had a new album coming out March 2nd entitled Rock n’ Roll Ice Cream. Japanther flew out to L.A to produce their new album with former Madonna and Pink Floyd producer Micheal Blum, does this make any sense to anyone? Acordding to the Village Voice Japanther rejected Blums 10,000 dollar microphones only to sing into their own home made telephone mics…rad. Also a new member has joined the name, Annita Sparrow who adds some great female vocal harmonies to what was once such a minimal band. I’ve heard one song, and it rules. So here it is.

The infamous Montreal music scene. At one time the home of some incredible bands and the creation of a sound that defined and raised Canadian independent music to the standard it sits at today. Then it was sucked in, chewed up, and spit out by the media hype machine. What began as a genuine and beautifully crafted creative expression quickly deteriorated into a very shitty, very contrived initation, masquerading as the real thing.

“Have you heard that new band from Montreal?”

“No, are they good?”

“I haven’t heard them either, but probably. They’re from Montreal!”

“Cool.”

Now, I don’t want to sound bitter. I LOVE Montreal. It is the absolute bee’s knees. To prove it, I’ll let you know about this great band that calls it home. Out of the ashes of the legacy built by bands like Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, and The Unicorns comes Parlovr.

I instantly liked this band from the first time I listened to their self-titled album. Armed with plenty of poppy hooks, twangy guitars, and mildly strained, up-beat vocals this band will make you bob your head. You might even feel like dancing. Yeah, you probably will want to dance, so make sure you are somewhere with lots of pretty boys/girls when you put this on.

Hiccup! – Parlovr

Sever My Ties – Parlovr

So great music is still being made in Montreal, just like in every other major city in the world. While a person’s surroundings are obviously an influence, how good, or not good, a band is should never be judged by what city it comes from.

And anyone who still doesn’t believe that I love Montreal is welcome to fly me out there and I will gladly show them how much fun it is.

Don’t feel to bad about misspelling or forgetting this bands name, it can be easily confused with Megafun or Megafauna (a large land animal weighing over 45 kilos…). Oddly enough Megafaun stirs up feelings of MEGA FUN and possibly the mental imagery of some Megafauna, like a huge deer or caribou. The band was formed by two brothers Brad and Phil Cook, who have played with the likes of Bon Iver. Keeping that in mind I’m sure conclusions will be drawn prior to the actual listening of Megafaun and of course the influence is there. However Megafaun has a few things that no band seems to have. On the their newest release “Gather, Form & Fly” we find three young men creating something they feel perfectly comfortable with. Its a folk blend of many hugely popular indie bands around. Some of the first things I noticed where the sweet Fleet Foxes vocal melodies, however in Megafauns case we see a bit of human between the shining and sparkling perfection of Fleet Foxes. As well we have the twangy mountain folk, which seems to be interrupted with powerful stomping choruses not to mentioned the bizarre rhythmic loops found in songs like “The Process”. To make this simple lets take Yeasayer, Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, American Beauty era Grateful Dead and Bon Iver, throw them all in a blender with a quart of moonshine and you have Megafaun, a band I highly recommend to anyone and everyone!

Good morning everyone! I’m sure you’ve had a long weekend, just like 99% of us. And just like us your probably still feeling the effects of that wonderful night you had this weekend. And when Sunday reared its gruesome head and your eyelids where glued shut I’m sure you cried “It’s not worth it!”. I can also guarantee it most likely wasn’t worth it. That splitting headache, sore bones and sandpaper throat are no reward for the attempted kiss you tried to steal from that dance floor sweetheart. “I’ll never do that again!” you scream to the heavens…Well friend let me tell you something, you will and here is a band to perfectly back that hazy hops fueled Friday that lays only a handful of days away. You may not want to hear it from me now, but let me tell you that this band will become your go to party band this month. Think About Life is a Montreal based band that I promise will dominate your local dance floor and week now. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before these songs are played to death by every DJ in the country, but remember you heard it hear first, maybe. They blend classic record sampling with disco beats and an oh-so-sweet T.V On The Radio-esque vocalist. Every moment of this album is infectious and catchy, the listener is aloud maybe a moments rest before the beat kicks back in and your hips are swaying, hair in your eyes and sweat on your brow. You mouth the words to “Havin’ My Baby” across the room to the cutie you’ve been eying, and surprisingly they mouth it back, this is the future, trust me.
