Maps & Atlases are a band I’ve been following for a long time now. I remember first hearing their debut album and not believing it. In my taste they are almost a perfect band. Skipping joyously in between an unruly technicality cyclone and  tasty soul/folk/pop. Over the past few years, and with each new release Maps & Atlases have slowly started to loose the overwhelming time signatures and double hand guitar tapping harmonies to lean more on their songwriting strengths. It’s very easy to get pigeon-holed as a “math” or “experimental” band and these guys sure figured out how to fight off the labels to create something fresh and new. Where many have failed Maps & Atlases once again prove to one and all that they are an untamable shape shifting entity. Solid Ground sounds part sweet lullaby part art film beach sunset outro part classic Map & Atlases riffing. Singer Dave Davison (haha) has not only grown a gigantic beared, he’s locked down his signature singing style with more soul than ever before. (more…)

Our friends at winniecooper.net are a bunch of awesome guys. What feels like only weeks ago, when they staged their first  night in a little dive bar has expanded into a realm which it will never return, like the rings of Saturn or Cloud City. No More Strangers proudly celebrated their first year with a bang I could have never expected. The newly renovated Funky Winkerbean, ripe with anticipation and smiling faces was wall to wall with people by 10:00pm, an early start aided by some wild laser lights and some expert dj’ing by the resident head masters Hunk The Drunk and Christian Flores. A few distracted and scattered bodies swayed and bobbed on the dance floor waiting for the night to truly begin. And when Myths took the stage, our minds crumbled with they flung into our faces. Two girlies pranced around the stage in homemade garb, lace wrapped tightly around their faces. Laptop beats pounded endlessly, delayed and echoed unintelligible shrieks cascading over a sea of synthy grimy electro. Harder to describe than most bands this video will give you a pretty good idea of the feelings I was left with:

When that was finally over and we’d smoked our way through a half pack each, most returned to the dance floor or the epic bar line to secure their final drink before the much anticipated Diamond Rings took to the stage. A small speech was made by founder HUNK and cake was distributed. What came next was a real spectacle. Diamond Rings, gold tights, neon make up and freshly painted nails was a captivating presence as I’ve ever seen. An 80′s pop hero, half Bowie half Laurie Anderson and of course 100% glam idol. Incredibly smooth choreographed dance moves across a stage too small to hold his brilliance. Although it wasn’t the fastest dance music I’ve ever heard, it kept the crowd captivated and swaying to and fro. As Diamond Rings announced his last song, balloons cascaded from over head filling the room with colour and cries of delight. And then it was over, a packed dance floor continued to bob with the music until with a flick of the light switch, it was over and everyone was ushered into the street.

Cant stop listening. So good, so so so good.

I totally passed over these guys this summer. Pretty sad that I did now that its gloomy and rainy 90% of the time. However spring is on the horizon, which begets summer. And I have a feeling these guys are going to be on a steady mix of playlists this year round. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. The music of Breakfast Mountain is almost paradoxical, glitchy and smooth. Dissonant and melodic. Intermittently cut with random hip hop samples. I was suprised to see the two members didn’t consist of headlamp lap top junkies, rather a keyboard mastermind complete with turn tables and prone to hilarious repping dance moves, and the most surprising of all; a live drummer! Its refreshing to hear some awesome straight up electro, something that gets your body moving from the get go, no pretensions, just groove. Breakfast Mountain is offering a free 25 song download of what seems to be all their material to date. I was pretty shocked when it opened on my desktop in all its cap locked glory to take over my Itunes, and so far every song has been great. Check it out here.

When a band takes a prolonged break in between albums it’s not hard to expect that they have either gotten lazy, or are working on a masterpiece. It’s also hard to not to expect such a masterpiece from a band which revolutionized your musical taste as an adolescent. And for a band prone to evolution like Daughters, the wait for this self titled album was almost painful.  But like a pending dose of morphine Daughters delivers in a way only they can. Anyone familiar with the group can recall their departure from the grindcore scene by completely cutting out the throaty screams of Alexis Marshall to be replaced exclusively with a southern preachers drawl. ‘Hell Songs’ their second album showcased a sound which proved to be a segway to where they now reside. If there is one thing Daughters proved on this album is you can be insanely heavy with out the tell tale sounds of metal. The things left out on this album (wild banshee screams, shredding guitar solos ect)  make it all that much better. The constant pounding of guitars cranked to ten, dissonant as can be, sludgy distorted bass, machine gun drumming as played by a bridge troll, and of course the signature Alexis Marshall vocal accompaniment. One is left with an image of a drunken reverend, strapped to a nuclear bomb, half singing, half shouting warnings of an impending Apocalypse. If I was to rate this album, I’d give it 100 cans of toxic waste of of 100, but since we don’t do that here at Bluegrassish, here is one of our co-founders iceonthetrail to break down this mutated Mona Lisa track by track.

Formally known as “In” Keepaway must have realized the inevitable headaches fans would have suffered while searching for their music. Luckily for us they chose a name that in my opinion is a bit more suited for their sound. Keepaway is a playful half electronic half live band with obvious roots to bands like Animal Collective and Yeasayer. What makes them that much different is the surprising pop hooks that are interwoven with layered live drums and loopy samples to create something quite refreshing. A lot of the experimental heaviness of their predecessors is left out and what we are given is a airy spring day, jogging through a park with your headphones on, not thinking about where your going or how you’ll get back. Keepaway’s album “Baby Styles” is out May 18th and I am super excited to see if these guys can pull through and carve a name for them selves in a scene so drenched with copy cats. Check out these two tracks that have been soaring around the internet and then head over to their myspace to listen to some tracks that I had an impossible time tracking down, I suggest Evil Lady and Riddim Hunt.
