Wow this is kind of exciting! 200th post, seems like a landmark! Instead I’ll tell you abut a little Vancouver band called The Orpheans. Blues rock. Fucking awesome, kickass, amazing, heart-wrenching. If you live in Vancouver, you’ve probably seen DB Buxton performing on the street (probably Granville) with a guitar bag in front of him. Give him your money. If you haven’t seen him…

He’s in a band, with Nick Eccleston, and Randy Kramer. They are called the Orpheans and they are playing tonight at the Cobalt. Definitely check this shit out. They’ve also got a 7″ available at Neptune records. We’ve got it here and it’s definitely worth the $7.
And remember, support your local music scene. Especially when it is fantastically great.

This young Underwater Peoples artist has really captured my heart. Honest and poetic songs with the perfect amount of tape crackle and buzz. A lot of U.S.A references can be heard through out the album After The Grave Yard, maybe patriotism has blossomed in the underground scene or maybe it’s just irony. A somewhat punk-folk troubadour, Liam The Younger’s songs capture your attention with their simplicity and frankness, the perfect music for late late nights or early morning sunrises. First heard a couple of Liam’s tracks on the older Underwater Peoples Summer Sampler, then the masterpiece Please See on their Winter Sample which of course enticed me to order both of Liam’s LP’s almost immediately. Take a time machine back to 1979, if you may. A little band out of California called Suburban Lawns makes wacky new waveish hits. A weird Devo/B52′s combination of frantic guitar riffing, bleep bloop synths and sometimes tame sometimes wild back and forth male female vocals. A rather short lived band Suburban Lawns only released one full length (self titled) and an EP between the years of 79-81. Too bad because this stuff really shreds. Anyone into a bit of fun, a lot of artistic license and more then one song about genitals should check these guys out.

Ghana Post Office Work Song

A field recording made of Ghana post workers canceling mail. The rhythmic sounds are a combination of the following:

Light Thud - Slapping of the letter to bring in position on the table to be canceled.
Lowest Thud - The stamp being inked one or more times.
High Thud – The letter being stamped and canceled.
A High Pitch Snap - Scissors being snapped together for rhythmic effect
Hand Clap – Done by the whistler

There are four men in this recording, two doing the stamping, one man handling the scissors and one man who carries the tune and hand claps.

Absolutely breathtaking.

a Wild Smile! Suckers seem to have crossed this insane threshold between little known blogosphere meme and indie supergroup and if this album proves anything it’s that they deserve it. Suckers range, song writing and overall ability to wow the listener will make them a household name. Singers Pan and Quinn have a falsetto that could break glass, big rhythms and totally rad trumpet too! Some how a weird cross between Genesis and Wild Beasts, if you know what I mean. This album needs to be heard, by all.
