Dirty Projectors and Bjork!

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Dirty Projectors deserve your attention. Beautiful vocal harmonies straddling the line of grating and gratifying, complex guitar parts, issued electronics it’s all there.  These tracks are from the Bjork/Dirty Projectors collaboration Mount Wittenberg Orca that came out earlier this year.  Super sick stuff. Enjoy!

Silver Bullets

Silver Bullets

Hypnotic, psychedelic beats. Blues head nodding mixed with 70′s fuzz and a polite tip of the hat to early funk.  The kind of music you would hear if you were a square, young protagonist in a coming-of-age film, you just ate a blotter of acid in your parents living room and now you’re sailing the corduroy arm chair on an ocean of shag carpet.

Sharp Ends:

Monday, October 25th, 2010

These guys poked there head into our room while we where practicing on friday, playing two shows in Vancouver that weekend. Sadly I was unable to attend either of them.. However I did manage to find a copy of their 7″ record which was released by Mammoth Cave. This Alberta label seriously blows my mind. I’ve yet to hear a single band on their roster that I didn’t love. Check out these infectious lo-fi punk tunes. Apparently Sharp Ends will be back in November, here’s hoping!

COOLRUNNINGS

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

I little while ago my buddy Juice told me about a band called Cool Runnings. My response to him was that when a band picks a name shared by one of my favorite John Candy movies, they better be damn good. Thankfully these guys deliver.

BANKROBBER:

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

BANKROBBER is a Victoria band made up mostly of used frying pans and banana bread. They take part in rituals unknown to most common place kinfolk. A smoky back road hike from the river. Cloudiness with variable chances of clear skies. Your grandfathers best friend Louis. All these things and one. Syrupy melodies mostly made up of maple but sometimes rhubarb. A treat for the ears, a ghostly melodic folk haven. Midjuly by BANKROBBER for free HERE? Pick up Luminous Piles Of Fir as well from that nifty site.

I “fall” for The Black Angels again:

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Sometimes I feel so blessed. Like there is this overwatching music god, who looks down on me every day. He pases his room in the cosmos and tries to plan out interesting ways in which he can coax out a little joy from me. Perhaps he would feed on this emotion if he was real, or maybe it’s just to see the look on my face but one the first listen of The Black Angels Phosphene Dream I’m sure you could see a smile on my face from the reaches of outer space. I have covered The Black Angels in great length on this blog, including a lengthy article and a few singles. Easily one of my favourite and longest liked bands The Black Angels have gone and done it again and in perfect timing. Fall is here, gone are the days of shimmering summer rhythms and just to synch it up perfectly Phosphene Dream takes the listener on a sombre yet ecstatic journey through 60′s throwbacks. In a way only The Angels can shit gets heavy, shit gets droney but unlike their previous albums…shit gets catchy. This album has all the old elements of the The Black Angels, continuous drone keyboard, driving guitars and drums and of course everything soaked in a warm blanket of reverb. Luckily the format changes on songs like Sunday Afternoon and Telephone. We are hit with wicked 60′s pop rock stylings in a fantastic way. I’m in love, this album will be in my top 5 of the year for sure. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy, the vinyl record is complete with psychedelic album art and inner art book!

My Friend Wallis

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Sometimes you come across something that just makes you happy to be wherever you may happen to be. My Friend Wallis is from Vancouver. They make beautiful, gorgeous, relaxed music. Like that feeling you get when you go on vacation somewhere warm and you are sitting outside in the sun for the first time. The ice in your drink is melting and the condensation is building on the glass. It is keeping your hands cool, it feels nice. A slight breeze is winding through the air, gently blowing your hair across your forehead and you are thinking to yourself, “Ahhh…this is nice.”

I posted a couple of songs, but you can get the whole album for free on their bandcamp.
