Bobby McFerrin – By The Sea
Monday, November 1st, 2010Silver Bullets
Tuesday, October 26th, 2010
Hypnotic, psychedelic beats. Blues head nodding mixed with 70′s fuzz and a polite tip of the hat to early funk. The kind of music you would hear if you were a square, young protagonist in a coming-of-age film, you just ate a blotter of acid in your parents living room and now you’re sailing the corduroy arm chair on an ocean of shag carpet.

Totally Nebular – Snowmass

A new one by Totally Nebular. I LOVE their style, there are natural imperfections in their songs that keep reminding you that there are actual humans behind the instruments. It’s the imperfections that add to the charm.

White Denim – The Last Day of Summer
Monday, September 27th, 2010
The Last Day of Summer is the new album by garage-rockers White Denim, which is available by donation on their website. I have always been a big fan, but this new stuff blew me away. The album as a whole is much softer and soulful compared to their earlier work and is probably my favourite material to date. This self-released album is meant as a pacifier as we wait for their third album. With this album so good, I am very very excited to see what they come out with next.
White Denim – i’d have it just the way we were

Cosmic Sound
Friday, September 17th, 2010
Cosmic Sound is Stephen Farris, a young man living in Houston, Texas. He weaves electronic beats, found sounds and dirty cassettes into soundscapes that could be soundtracks to forgotten nature documentaries, not unlike some of my favourite Boards of Canada tracks. Some of the songs have lyrics, some do not. Great for evenings when you don’t know what to listen to. The whole EP can be downloaded from his Myspace

“I Got …” Mix N Blend w/ Narch (beats antique REMIX)
Tuesday, August 31st, 2010Out of curiosity I have been listening to quite a bit of Dubstep these days, I’m not a huge fan of most of it, but this song definitely caught my ear. The horns are so rad.
Ghana Post Office Work Song
Tuesday, August 10th, 2010
A field recording made of Ghana post workers canceling mail. The rhythmic sounds are a combination of the following:
- Light Thud - Slapping of the letter to bring in position on the table to be canceled.
- Lowest Thud - The stamp being inked one or more times.
- High Thud – The letter being stamped and canceled.
- A High Pitch Snap - Scissors being snapped together for rhythmic effect
- Hand Clap – Done by the whistler
There are four men in this recording, two doing the stamping, one man handling the scissors and one man who carries the tune and hand claps.
Absolutely breathtaking.
