Name that Tune!!

Monday, September 20th, 2010

I found a burned CD in a box in my room a while ago. It was entitled “French Electro”. I remember it was given to me by a friend who told me that he didn’t know any of the track names or artists, and neither did the guy that he had received the CD from. Most of the songs on it are so horrible I couldn’t listen to them all the way through. But there are some gems.

If you know who made these songs and what they are called please share your great knowledge. I must know. I simply must. It is driving me mad.

UPDATE!!!! Our wonderful friend Tom sent us all the info on these songs. Mystery solved. Tom you are a true fan of music and a scholar.

(Tom lives in Vancouver and plays ambient music in Gak, check it out here  http://gak.muxtape.com)

Cosmic Sound

Cosmic Sound
Cosmic Sound is Stephen Farris, a young man living in Houston, Texas. He weaves electronic beats, found sounds and dirty cassettes into soundscapes that could be soundtracks to forgotten nature documentaries, not unlike some of my favourite Boards of Canada tracks. Some of the songs have lyrics, some do not. Great for evenings when you don’t know what to listen to. The whole EP can be downloaded from his Myspace

Cosmic Sound – Bear Auras
Cosmic Sound – Backyard Woods
Cosmic Sound – Weird Trees

North Of America:

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

1997-present. Wait wow, thats a long time! Lets also factor in the sound of North Of America; Pavment, Modest Mouse and Cap n’Jazz have a fist fight. This is a recipe for sheer and utter bliss but wait there’s more. These guys are from Canada! Straight out of Halifax for the past 13 years and they STILL rock it hard. I have no idea how this band has passed me by for so long. If anything is up my alley it’s this. Angsty 90′s teen shriek fest with a tone that makes you want to beat the beer your holding into the side of your head. Seriously please do yourself a favour and check these guys out, they just played Sled Island this summer, maybe if enough chatter goes around we’ll get a cross Canada tour out of it. you can download all of Elements of an Incomplete Map here.

BYKX

Three bros. from Victoria BC whipping up a fury like a race horse in a running rink.  Impenetrable dust cloud, bass heavy in the loud speaker.  Skate punk in the vein of The Meat Puppets or Minutemen.

Our friend over at 420-69.com showed me this incredible video last night which left me in stichtecs on the floor, and since I’ve probably watched this about 20 times since, I figured I’d share it with you. If your in need of a quick chuckle head over to 420-69 for a myriad of pictures, videos and songs. Fuck yeah Tony.

Deer Tick:

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Country music is a taboo few music critics of my persuasion would ever dabble into. There is something so dirty about it that makes you cringe and your musical gentials crawl up into your stomach. Now luckily for us, there are certain forms of the genre that have been deemed listen-able, or created to suite our needs. Be it classic country like Patsy Cline or Hank Williams or “alt-country” like Spiderbags, Jon Rae Fletcher and thankfully, Deer Tick. Now Deer Tick definetly borders the fine line between cheesy modern country and fantastic alt-country at times but one is able to see past those slight twinges and move past it to the utter state of rural bliss the music transports you to. John Joseph McCauley’s vocals at first can be  tad overwhelming, the first Deer Tick album I heard was Born On Flag Day which he either hammed up, or just didn’t seem to care as much as on the newer releases. Now by no means is it “bad” it’s just…different. Drawly and raspy like sandpaper being dragged across concrete (in a good way). The instrumentation shines and shimmers, perfectly complimenting McCauley’s tales of heart ache, liquor and rambling. In the right setting Deer Tick is a feast for the ears, but with their large catalog of songs you can find the right song for any setting, be it a rambunctious barn burner or a light piano medley. Dig it.
