Listening Party

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Sunday night on a long weekend. In the kitchen eating pepperoni sticks and cooking a lasagna. It’s a little bit chilly outside but the day has been nice. It wasn’t one of those hot, lazy, beautiful summer days. But it was good, you got shit done. The sun is going down now, the night is relaxed as music flows through the speakers. No one is talking, not precisely because there is nothing to say, but because it isn’t needed. You sway to the melody and lightly bob your head.

Thee Oh Sees:

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Opening your album with a 14 minute song that takes up the entire first side of a 12″ vinyl seems quite ballsy, but if there’s balls in Orange County, Thee Oh See’s have got ‘em. The first track Warm Slime is far beyond what I could have expected, fuzzed out almost past audio recognition building a repetitive chorus of “I believe in the summer time…” which probably takes up 3/4 of the song. Declining and building again in an almost post-rock fashion. But hold fast avid reader, by no means does this every get boring or tedious. More so it feels like your brain is bursting from the inside out. The entire album, as short as it is, is a constant blitz of insanely catchy psych-thrash. Incredibly noisy in a way that makes the geese under your skin stand up, dance and die.  Driving, like a Camero barreling down Hi-way 66. Enchanting like some fucked up voodoo you cant quite grasp. Dig these mp3′s below but do yourself a favor and pick up the clear and orange marbled vinyl, it’s super cheap and needs to heard in that format.

Sunglasses in their natural habitat

Sweet sweet harmonies, groovy groovy beats.

Happy, catchy, and trippy just the way everyone likes it. Two college bros out of Georgia making no-nonsense pop songs, with some added nonsense.

They have an EP due out on Lefse Records on June 16th.

Sunglasses – Stand Fast

Sunglasses – Referee

Oh, they made a music video, and it rocks.

Fair Ohs:

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Fair Ohs are a quirky and jangly english indie punk gem. Picking up more steam than Thomas Newcomen’s first engine. It’s like being at the beach and rinding the Eye of London at the same time, half cut and having the time of your life.

Here We Go Magic

Here We Go Magic

Charming charming charming. Started as a solo project by Luke temple, he got friends to help, so there is more people in the band now.  They play songs that bring you up, chill you out and warm your heart.  Something like drying off around a campfire after swimming in the ocean all night. The self titled album is a potpourri of acoustic jams, fuzzy psychedelic drone, and swirling repetitive rhythms. Something for everyone!

Here We Go Magic – Tunnel Vision

Here We Go Magic – I Just Want to See You Underwater

Here We Go Magic – Fangela

Gauntlet Hair

Gauntlet Hair
Two friends making reverb-drenched jams that will fit nicely with the coming Summer months.  A perfect soundtrack for sipping Pina Coladas, digging your feet into the hot sand and soaking up some much needed Vitamin D. Don’t forget sunscreen.

African pop music is so incredible! From The Democratic Republic of the Congo comes Konono N°1.

I read the wiki post on Konono N°1 and subsequently had my mind blown. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konono_N°1

Then I watched this video.

A wooden microphone! Shiit.

Totally Nebular

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Like finding an old, dirty record of your favourite childhood songs and playing it for your closest friends. You all scream and shout along, banging the walls and stomping your feet. You know the words, you grew up singing them. One of your friends knocks over your kitchen cupboard, spilling a wave of metal and porcelain onto the floor. As the pots and pans clang and rattle to the ground, you know the mess doesn’t matter, you’re having too much fun.
