Too Punk For Life (RIP Jay Reatard):

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Quick update, Jay Reatard has passed on as of 3:30 am yesterday morning. Reatard was a well respected garage punk from Memphis who played and lived fast. Despite quite the mean streak and a reputation for controversial outbursts Jay was a huge inspiration or me personally in the music that I play and I am deeply saddened by this loss. As facts start to surface Jay will either become a legend, or fearfully the punch line to the end of a cruel joke. Either way I will always respect him for all that he’s done. May his true eulogy be whiskey stained and set aflame.

It still hasn’t cleared up but what a lovely picture of Vancouver if I do say so. Here are some songs picked by J.Fox.

Grey Days

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

It was a another grey morning in Vancouver, but things seem to be looking up. The Sun is trying its best to peek through the clouds and have a visit, so lets give it some encouragement by listening to some great music and hope the brave and valiant Sun kicks some evil raincloud ass and lets us go outside tonight.

Vancouver Has The Biggest Puddles:

Monday, January 11th, 2010

It’s truly one of those days when it would have been so easy to call in sick to work and lay on the couch all day. Unfortunately bank accounts don’t take sick days. These two songs made me feel much more optimistic about my morning.

Wild Beasts – Devils Crayon

Wild Beasts – Vigil For A Fuddy Duddy

The Mantles:

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

The Mantels is kind of like when you finally got the courage to crawl down into the dusty, dark and spider infest crawl space of your parents house to pull out a giant box of dusty old records your dad filed away in shame after a wild youth he’d rather hide and repress. (more…)

Videogasm IV:

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

check out this video for Double Daggers song “Vivre Sans Temps Mort” directed by Cat Solen. Completely made with still photography and stop animation, a thrilling ride through the life of a small Asian model maker. Although they’ve been around for quite some time and with Pitchfork treating them like a handicapped grandchild I will say Double Dagger is a band to watch out for, minimal punk consisting of a bass, some drums and an anxious singer yelping to the heavens. Enjoy.

Ain’t Winter Grand?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Ok, so winter is actually kinda shitty. I wake up in the morning and it’s dark, and guess what it is when I leave work? That’s right, dark. At 5:00. Bullshit. And it’s all rainy and dreary outside, which makes me feel even worse about  failing on my New Years resolutions. And I have to wear a jacket, like, all the time. Sorry Winter, but you suck. You make me sad. Almost as sad as when I have to go to work. If my job and Winter had a baby together it would probably look a lot like Hitler.

Megafaun:

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Don’t feel to bad about misspelling or forgetting this bands name, it can be easily confused with Megafun or Megafauna (a large land animal weighing over 45 kilos…). Oddly enough Megafaun stirs up feelings of MEGA FUN and possibly the mental imagery of some Megafauna, like a huge deer or caribou. The band was formed by two brothers Brad and Phil Cook, who have played with the likes of Bon Iver.  Keeping that in mind I’m sure conclusions will be drawn prior to the actual listening of Megafaun and of course the influence is there. However Megafaun has a few things that no band seems to have. On the their newest release “Gather, Form & Fly” we find three young men creating something they feel perfectly comfortable with. Its a folk blend of many hugely popular indie bands around. Some of the first things I noticed where the sweet Fleet Foxes vocal melodies, however in Megafauns case we see a bit of human between the shining and sparkling perfection of Fleet Foxes. As well we have the twangy mountain folk, which seems to be interrupted with powerful stomping choruses not to mentioned the bizarre rhythmic loops found in songs like “The Process”. To make this simple lets take Yeasayer, Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, American Beauty era Grateful Dead and Bon Iver, throw them all in a blender with a quart of moonshine and you have Megafaun, a band I highly recommend to anyone and everyone!
