Happy Holidays Everyone!

The time is defiantly upon us now and I find myself spending more time in bed with book then searching the internet for a great new act/monster/artist/food processor to show you guys. What I’m trying to get at is that we’re going to be taking a little break for the rest of the holiday season through till new years. Now don’t fret, I know what your thinking and the answer is yes, you still will be getting that Snuggie for christmas. But just becuase you have a blanket with arms doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy all the things we do here at Bluegrassish! Take a look through our menu and maybe ready back a month or two, we have great articles from way back that probably where never even read. And a little treat from me to you personally. A winter time mix tape to which you will be able to load directly on to your mp3 player of choice and enjoy anytime! You can download it here. or by clicking on the picture at the top of this article. So once again, Happy Holidays from everyone at Bluegrassish, we’ll be seeing you in the new year..

love always,

I wish pigs flew instead.

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Normally what I would do here is get some information on some sort of terrifying animal, then try to form it into some sort of coherent string of words to share with everybody. Today is different. Today I have almost no information or statistics on what I am saying.

Just a few moments ago, I was looking at a list of non-bird animals that are able to fly, glide, or otherwise become airborne for an extended period of time. Everything was looking in order: ants that could maneuver and glide when they fell off trees, spiders that use web as parachutes to float along in the wind. Then I got to the next header which read ‘Moluscs’. Seems like a strange group to have a flying member, butd hey, they are a pretty diverse group that has everything from limpets to the octopus, maybe there is some strange offshoot species that catches wind as it falls or some nonsense like that. Then I saw it – Flying squid.

Now squid were scary enough when it was just a fast moving cephalopod with grasping tentacles and a powerful parrot-like beak. But now they can use jet propulsion to launch themselves into the air and travel distances up to 50 meters? “Bullshit!” was my initial response (that I probably shouldn’t have yelled out loud, being at work at the time). So I hit some wikipedia pages for flying squid, and while they did mention briefly that a form of squid jet propulsion does exist it didn’t say anything about lifting said squid out of the ocean, not to mention 50m. So I went to youtube and google images to see some visuals of this thing. Nothing. Not one credible image or video. I offer a bounty of $20 + a hug for a video of a squid flying by it’s own power, and a warning to watch yourself when near the ocean (maybe)

A Novel Update:

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

I previously posted an article about the formation and recording process of canadian indie super-group Novels which can be read here. They are a collaboration between most notably; Luke Leblonde of Born Ruffians, Will Curries and Graham Wright of Tokyo Police Club. In that previous article I posted 7 short videos documenting the recording of the EP Novels. We’ll through a massive search, some illegal ripping and a hissy fit or two I managed to capture a few Novels songs like the rare Pokemon they are. Enjoy!

The Choice is Ours

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Once upon a time, the Ghostbusters were told that they could choose the form their destruction would take and, unable to keep his mind blank, Ray thought up what should have been the tool of their demise in the form of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Now it is our turn to decide. We all know that eventually we will create robots that will turn on us in a murderous fashion. We just get the chance to choose what we’ll be looking at when we’re on the short end of the genocide stick. While I would personally choose something along the lines of “target shaped” it seems the general consensus between the technology firms is bears. Robot bears. (more…)

A Virtual Thriller

Monday, December 14th, 2009

With all the Michael Jackson nostalgia circulating through the media and social landscapes these days, I thought that I would ad my own little tidbit. This is the real deal. In 1989/90 U.S. Gold and Sega released the Michael Jackson video game, “Moonwalker”, to coincide with the release of his movie by the same name. I remember playing this game at Chucky Cheese when I was a kid and as I recall it was quite a fun game. At the time it was just awesome, now it seems a bit creepy and weird, and a little more awesome. (more…)

Bad Fate:

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I’m a sucker for a band that can melt my brain like it was Chernobyl round two. Sure I like most bands I see live and it’s always easy to pick a few things you love and focus in on them, writing a dazzling puff piece about their originality, song structure, cute members and the list goes on and on. However when you see a band and they catch you off guard within the first minute of their set, draw you up to the front and forget everything that was happening prior to this sudden magical moment, thats when you have something special and I’ll say that Bad Fate is beyond just a special band. Having your eardrums beat half to death with overwhelming distortion and feedback hasn’t been this pleasurable since I heard Pere Ubu’s ‘Nonalignment Pact” and the music of Bad Fate isn’t too far off from that. Bad Fate tells me they are embarrassed of their non-existent stage presence, I say who needs it. I would be satisfied if they played these songs sitting down, laying down on a bed under a foot thick comforter. It’s an incredible wall of sound with triple guitar harmonies, furious drumming and perfect vocal accompaniment. I’ll let the music speak for it’s self, I’m done being the obnoxious fan boy for a band ‘so underground it’s Fraggle Rock’ as their myspace will tell you. Please please please check these guys out here and if their playing near you anytime soon, you wont be disappointed.
